Potluck #55 - Facebook

I had been using Facebook for just about a month when this Potluck exercise came up. I've already made use of many of the features mentioned, such as sending and receiving Flair and finding friends. I joined because 2 friends from college sent me a request. I was hesitant because I previously had a myspace page which I found cumbersome and not worth the effort. I didn't get much response. However, I've found Facebook to be much, much easier to use. And more importantly, it's amazing how many people I am reconnecting with. It searches your yahoo email address book and finds those people on facebook. I've found old college friends and cousins who live out of state. It's easy to maintain (no "pimping" needed) and easy to use. I love it.

Wellness #42

Activity #1 - I tried the symptom checker. It was OK. I wish there were more questions that it asked. For example, for the child section, it did not ask the age of the child. Yet the response may different for an infant than it would be for an older child.

Activity #3
I created a family history. The part that could be used for genealogy study would be the inclusion of names and age at death of various family members (grandparents, aunts, etc). It would help you spot a pattern.

Wellness #41 part 1

Activity 1:
I used the Yahoo!Green to calculate my carbon footprint. Unfortunately it is 18.1 while the average is 9.44. So our footprint is above average. It all comes from our vehicles.

Activity 2:
I do enjoy going to farmer's markets. Here in the Clear Lake, we have a rather small market. I don't buy much from there because there isn't much available. I havent' been to the big one in Houston. I have visited the farmer's markets in Dallas and Austin when I lived in those places. The Dallas one had tons of vegetables. But I really enjoyed the Austin one the best. There was a good amount of fresh veggies, but also lots of vendors selling other items, such as local goat cheese, bread, and cooked items. It really gives you the flavor of a town.

Wellness #40 - Fitness

I was pleasently surprised by my results. My BMI was right in the middle of the healthy zone. When I did the life expectancy, I was very happily surprised to see my life expectancy at 97.8 years. While the poll was not as detailed as I'd like, it was good to know that I am actually on the right track.

Wellness #39: Nutrition

I do try to eat healthy most days. A few years ago I lost 35 pounds. Since then I've kept it off by not "dieting" but trying to make permanent healthy food choices. I really liked the Nutrion Data sight. If it was available a few years ago, it probably would have made my weight loss easier! I really liked how you could find the nutritional information to a huge range of foods-even name brand foods and takeout. The takeout part was really helpful because sometimes you have to pick up something fast or on the road (chick fil a seems to be the way to go, there isn't too much sugar in the sauces like in other places). It can really help you make smart choices. Or at least you don't have the excuse that you don't know what the real calories are anymore.

For recipe sparkles, I put in a simple recipe for quesadillas
1 flour tortilla
shredded cheddar
salsa
onion

I ended up with 207.9 calories & 2.3 grams of fat.

Spring Cleaning # 30 - Take a load off our drives

For this post I looked through all of the files on my computer. First, I moved and deleted a file to the S: drive. I had never used this drive before. I don't know how often I'll need it, but it's good to know it's there. They, I looked at the P: drive. I already had my own folder on my branch's P: drive. I use this folder when I am on a computer that is not logged into my person profile, but I still need to save or work on a project. It wasn't in too bad of shape, but I did delete some items and move some other items to my Z: drive. I already had quite a collection of folders going on in my Z: drive. As I have been with HCPL less that 2 years, nothing was too old. However, I did take this opportunity to clean up and further organize some of my folders so that they are now a little easier to navigate. Overall, I found I was already somewhat organized but that it was good to have an incentive to clean up a little before the messiness got out of hand. As it was, it only took about 20 minutes to clean everything up.

Spring Cleaning #29 - Email

I do already have a personal email address, so I've never had a problem with having to use my work email as a personal email (except for my husband who always emails me books to request for him, but I guess that is kind of work-related). My inbox is pretty clear and I actually just recently deleted a large amount of trash and sent emails. I've used the folder system since I started at HCPL. However, I noticed what I need to go through were the folders I had already set up. Because these folders were going on 2 years, I noticed that many of the items were outdated and no longer needed. I've started to go through these folders and clean them up, delete some, and consolidate others. This takes a little bit longer because now I need to think carefully about what I really need and what I am just holding on to as a security blanket! Hopefully, I will continue to do a good job of keeping my inbox, sent and trash boxes clear-perhaps on a weekly basis. I probably need to actually looking at my folders on a quarterly basis.
